Unlocking Tax Savings: New Tip Deduction Occupations

On September 2, 2025, the Treasury Department unveiled an exciting opportunity for workers across several industries with their draft list of 68 occupations now eligible for the "no tax on tips" deduction. Thanks to the "One Big Beautiful Bill Act," approved on July 4, 2025, workers can enjoy tax savings on their tip income from 2025 to 2028. Let’s explore what this means for you!

This provision facilitates a tax deduction for up to $25,000 in tips per individual per year, serving as a "below-the-line" deduction. This means it’s available to those claiming the standard deduction, but it doesn’t influence the calculation of adjusted gross income (AGI).

Here’s a glimpse at some of the occupations now eligible for this deduction:

Beverage & Food Service:

  • Bartenders
  • Wait staff
  • Fast food workers
  • Chefs and cooks
  • Host staff

Entertainment and Events:

  • Gambling dealers
  • Digital content creators
  • Musicians and singers
  • Ushers
  • Disc jockeys

Hospitality and Guest Services:

  • Concierges
  • Maids and housekeeping cleaners
  • Hotel desk clerks

Home Services:

  • Home maintenance workers
  • Locksmiths
  • Roadside assistance workers

Personal Services:

  • Personal care workers
  • Tutors
  • Nannies and babysitters

To qualify, individuals must work in eligible occupations recognized for receiving tips before 2025. Tips should be customer-initiated—not mandatory service charges—and properly reported to the IRS.

The maximum deduction remains $25,000 annually but is reduced gradually for those with higher incomes. Notably, this deduction applies solely to income taxes, while tips remain subject to Social Security and Medicare contributions.

This tax initiative is temporary, scheduled to end after 2028. However, its impact on workers in eligible occupations during this period could be substantial. Keep in mind, many state tax implications will also vary, demanding careful navigation through individual state tax stipulations.
