Key Tax Deadlines for Individuals in January 2026

The start of a new year heralds fresh tax deadlines. January 2026 is crucial for individual taxpayers concerning estimated payments, tip reporting, and strategic tax planning. Prepare yourself by understanding due dates and planning accordingly.

January 2 - Schedule Your Tax Appointment

Tax season officially kicks off in January. If you haven't booked your tax preparation appointment yet, we recommend doing so promptly to avoid the seasonal rush.

January 12 - Deadline to Report Tips

If you're an employee receiving more than $20 in tips during December, it's mandatory to report them to your employer by January 12. Use IRS Form 4070 or a signed statement detailing your tips, name, address, Social Security number, and your employer’s information. This report ensures proper withholding of FICA and income taxes from your wages. Should your wages fall short to cover these withholdings, the uncollected amount will be noted in box 8 of your W-2, requiring you to reconcile when you file your annual return.

January 15 - Fourth Quarter Estimated Tax Due

Mark this day for the final installment of your 2025 estimated tax payments. Failure to pay by this date means you'll need to file your 2025 tax return and settle all taxes due by February 2, 2026, to avoid penalties.

Weekend & Holiday Considerations:

Remember, should a deadline fall on a weekend or legal holiday, it automatically extends to the next business day.
