January 2026 Key Tax Deadlines for Businesses

With January 2026 on the horizon, it’s crucial for businesses, employers, farmers, and fishermen to keep abreast of upcoming tax deadlines. A proactive approach can ensure compliance and help avoid potential penalties.

January 15 - Employer's Monthly Deposit Due

Employers subject to monthly deposit rules should mark January 15 as the deadline for depositing Social Security, Medicare, and withheld income tax for December 2025. Additionally, nonpayroll withholdings for the same period are also due on this date if applicable under the monthly deposit rule. Remember, employment tax deposits must be conducted electronically unless your liability falls below $2,500 for a return period, allowing you to opt for quarterly or annual remittances along with your return.

January 15 - Farmers and Fishermen

It’s imperative for farmers and fishermen to pay their estimated taxes for 2025 by January 15 using Form 1040-ES. Although the income tax return (Form 1040 or 1040-SR) is not due until April 15, failure to pay by January 15 necessitates filing by March 2, 2026, to avoid penalties on estimated taxes.

Weekends & Holidays Considerations:

Be aware that any due date falling on a weekend or legal holiday automatically extends to the following business day that isn’t a holiday itself.

Disaster Area Extensions:

If your geographical location is declared a disaster area, tax due dates may be extended. Stay informed on these developments by reviewing the following resources for potential extensions:
FEMA: Disaster Declarations
IRS: IRS Tax Relief
