February 2026 Essentials: Tax Deadlines You Can't Miss

Welcome to your February 2026 tax prep guide. This month, we're focusing on crucial tax tasks like estimated payments, tip reporting, and W-4 form updates.

February 2 - Filing Estimated Taxes
If you missed the January cutoff for estimated tax payments, you still have an opportunity. By February 2, you should submit your 2025 income tax return using Form 1040 or 1040-SR. Filing and settling your tax dues by this date will waive penalties for missing the January 15 installment. Should you find the February deadline challenging, your next target is April 15 for filing and payments.

February 10 - Reporting Tips for Employees

Received more than $20 in tips in January? Make sure to report this to your employer. Use IRS Form 4070, or draft your own signed statement including your full name, social security number, employer details, the reporting period, and total tips earned. Your employer will deduct FICA and other applicable taxes from your pay based on these tips. Insufficient wages to withhold these taxes? Don’t worry—your employer will document the unpaid taxes in box 8 of your W-2. You’ll need to cover these when you file your annual tax return.

February 17 - W-4 Withholding Exemptions

For those who opted for tax withholding exemptions on your W-4 last year, it's time to act. Submit a new W-4 form to maintain your exemption status for this upcoming year.

Handling Weekend and Holiday Deadlines

If a deadline falls on a weekend or holiday, don't worry—it automatically shifts to the next business day. Such extensions can offer you some much-needed breathing room.
