Essential Tax Deadlines for December 2025

As the year winds down, keeping track of key tax deadlines is crucial for effective financial management. This month’s reminders cover critical areas like year-end tax planning, reporting tips, handling IRA withdrawals, and finalizing deductible payments for 2025.

December 10 - Report Tips to Your Employer

If you’re an employee who received over $20 in tips during November, ensure you report this amount to your employer by December 10 using IRS Form 4070. Your employer will need to withhold FICA taxes and income tax from your wages. If your earnings are insufficient for these withholdings, they’ll be noted in box 8 of your W-2, and you’ll need to address these when filing your tax return.

December 31 - Final Chance for Mandatory IRA Withdrawals

Those born before January 1, 1952, should note December 31 as the last opportunity to withdraw from a Traditional IRA without penalty. For individuals who turned 73 in 2025, your first required distribution applies to this tax year, but you can postpone this until April 1, 2026. If your financial institution isn’t open on December 31, ensure arrangements are made beforehand.

December 31 - Last Day for 2025 Deductible Expenses

Make sure to settle any deductible expenses for your 2025 tax return by December 31, excluding IRA, SEP, or Keogh contributions, which can be paid after this date. Further, if your financial actions can't be completed within a day or fall on this date, plan ahead as numerous financial institutions may not operate on December 31.

Weekends & Holidays:

Note that if a tax deadline falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, it automatically extends to the next business day that isn’t a holiday itself.

Disaster Area Extensions:

In cases where areas are recognized as disaster zones, deadline extensions apply. For detailed updates on disaster status and filing extension dates, visit the FEMA and IRS websites.
